Seattle to Brussels Netzwerk

Dieses Netzwerk wurde anlässlich der Mobilisierungen rund um das WTO-Ministertreffen in Seattle 1999 ins Leben gerufen. Das Netzwerk arbeitet zum Thema Handelspolitik innerhalb Europas. Umweltgruppen, entwicklungspolitische Gruppen, europäische Mitglieder von Via Campesina und Attac-Gruppen aus verschiedenen Ländern sind u.a. Mitglieder dieses Netzwerkes.

Kern der Arbeit ist die Mobilisierung gegen die EU-Außenhandelsstrategie „Globale Europe – Competing in the World“.

  • Global Europe - will the EU external trade strategy create more and better jobs in Europe?

The EU Commission and EU governments claim that further trade liberalization will spur growth, create more and better jobs in Europe and save the European Social Model. In this seminar we would like to assess the impacts of the EU's free trade agreements to date on jobs, workers and trade unions in particular in Europe and the Global South and discuss alternatives to free trade agreements.

  • People's struggles against European corporate power

Europe's TNCs and its corporate-driven agenda for the global economy are having devastating impacts on social, human, and environmental rights in the global South.   • European Imperialism. The role of the EU in destroying social and environmental rights globally

  • Exploding Food Prices. Building new alliances for access to healthy and affordable food for all

Food prices explode while real incomes of people in Europe decline. Access to food becomes again a social issue in Europe. Consumers pay increasingly higher prices for food, while peasant and family farmers in Europe continue to struggle for survival. We will discuss who benefits from exploding food prices, what the root causes are and how to build new alliances between farmers and consumers.

  • Trade and Climate Change: "Free trade" impasse, Fair Trade alternatives

  • Trade agreements between EU and Latin America - imperialism with a new face?

When the WTO-negotiations are stuck, the EU push for bilateral trade agreements. EU is now negotiating Association Agreements with Central America and the Andean community.
